Antique Thanksgiving Postcard Printables

Antique turkey postcard
Antique postcards of the holidays like Thanksgiving have a charm to them that can make them wonderful to use in all sorts of different crafts and decorations.

I have been collecting antique post cards for many years and use the seasonal ones through out the house during the holidays.

There were millions of postcards sent in the early part of the 1900s as printing costs became inexpensive and the technology to reproduce vivid colors improved. While these postcards were meant for the American market many of them were printed in Germany and England.

If you are interested in starting your own collection of antique or vintage postcards then you can start at the antique malls were they are often kept loose in boxes to sort through. The cost of these were between $1 and $3 each as they were not rare.

Here are four of my favorite Thanksgiving postcards from about 1909 that you can download as PDFs for your own use.

How to Make Garage Sale Finds Look Like Gift Shop Treasures

Jewelry from garage saleFinding something at a garage sale that you know is worth big bucks is a joy, especially if you can snap it up for pennies.

You might find the perfect gift for your oh so picky sister but you don't just want to put it in a paper bag and hand it over to her on her birthday. What happens if your treasure has some little bumps, marks or flaws on it, is it still worth buying and gifting?

How can you make your garage sale find look like it came from a pricey gift store?
Making cards from old National GeographicNational Geographic was a staple in homes for almost a century. The high quality magazine printed extraordinary photos on thick rich paper and many people held onto them for decades.

These old magazines are easy to find at thrift stores and the paper is great for using in crafts.

I like to pop in a little gift card with anything I give.
While my tastes tends to run to pretty and elegant many of my friends have more avant garde taste and I make up these little note cards when I give items to them.

Easy to make, just take some interesting pages from National Geography and glue to card stock. I do use a paper cutter which makes the edges nice and square.

Surprise Bag Mystery Bag Printables

Surprise bagI make these little mystery or surprise bags for raffle prizes.

I have also used them as little favors bag and I know that they would go great in loot bags or prize packets.

Kids aside these would be great to hold a small gift for your sweetie  (that you can leave on a pillow or bedside table).

These small bags are made from a single sheet of paper that has the question mark printed on it.

The bags themselves are easy to form on either a small sturdy box or a piece of lumber.  I have a PDF and tutorial to show how easy it is.

Improving Your Penmanship

PenmanshipAs an antique dealer I would often come across letters, invitations and cards that had the most beautiful handwriting.

In the age of text messaging, e-mails and quick telephone calls you don't appreciate the beauty of the written hand until it suddenly show up in front of you, a casual note jotted out by an older person has you thinking, "I really should improve how I write."

Handwriting was once considered a vitally important skill for anyone who wanted to appear well educated. Hours were spent with pen and ink perfecting cursive handwriting. For those that had a love of handwriting they could sign up for courses that would teach them fancier script still, like the famous Spencerian Script made famous through out America during the 1800's.

There are times that you want you handwriting to shine; when you are writing a loving note in a birthday card or holiday greeting. I treasure a simple thank you note my mother sent me years ago because the handwriting is so beautiful but also I can hear her voice on every line of the letter.

Re-Covering Spiral Notebooks - Tips & Hints

desk set
Recovering notebooks is such an easy way to make spiral notebooks more attractive (and unique) for just a few pennies. I first saw this idea at Pittypat Paperie and thought it was so clever. With school supplies in stores at rock bottom prices I picked up a few extra spiral notebooks to use but having them on my desk looked sloppy.

It is surprisingly easy to remove the spiral and add a front cover of your own choice. I chose to put a blue cover on my spiral notebook so it would match the rest of the blue items on my desk but the sky is the limit with your choices.

Take these packaging ideas that are used by the pros and your homemade and handmade gifts will rival anything that comes out of the high end shops.

Presents
Like any frugalista worth their salt I am already buying my Christmas presents.

I tend to start doing my gift buying about 6 to 8 months before the event because I have found in the past that if I try to do it any more than that then circumstances can change and what was perfect before now isn't (dessert cookbook for a sister who then looses 30lbs or sweater for a friend who then moves to a hot climate).

Flowers from the lawnMother's Day gifts that are fast and easy sound so... ungrateful, considering that they are for one of the most important people in your life. But if time it tight and your life is hectics sometimes this day can really creep up on you.

Many ideas that are on the internet seem to be for mothers that were born in the 1800's (how many tea cups can a woman want to own?) and our modern moms are so diverse. They might be owners of their own stores or stay at home moms with 20 acres out back that they have to farm.

Mom more than any one know that it is the thought that counts so here are 10 ideas of how to celebrate her at the last minute without shattering the budget and still making her feel appreciated.

Cookie dessert bathing in chocolate
Ahh, chocolate. Isn't it every woman's fantasy to be able to bathe her self in chocolate? Well you might not be able to but you can share the fantasy with this whimsical cookie dessert. Doesn't she look comfortable? Don't you wish you were her?

This funny little dessert is actually rather easy to pull together. The cookie is a basic sugar cookie with icing that has been strategically placed in a bowl of chocolate pudding. The taste is simple but satisfying and presentation is perfection. While I designed this for Mother's Day feel free to use it at anytime of year.

Flourishes on Envelopes

Flourish on envelopesAfter you have taken the time to either make or buy a card for a birthday (or Valentine's) it seems that just writing their name on the outside of the envelope just doesn't do the occasion justice.

Their name all lonely on the middle of the envelope looks so, so....plain. It is easy to add flourishes to a name to add some drama to it.
