Antique Thanksgiving Postcard Printables

Antique turkey postcard
Antique postcards of the holidays like Thanksgiving have a charm to them that can make them wonderful to use in all sorts of different crafts and decorations.

I have been collecting antique post cards for many years and use the seasonal ones through out the house during the holidays.

There were millions of postcards sent in the early part of the 1900s as printing costs became inexpensive and the technology to reproduce vivid colors improved. While these postcards were meant for the American market many of them were printed in Germany and England.

If you are interested in starting your own collection of antique or vintage postcards then you can start at the antique malls were they are often kept loose in boxes to sort through. The cost of these were between $1 and $3 each as they were not rare.

Here are four of my favorite Thanksgiving postcards from about 1909 that you can download as PDFs for your own use.

And how did you? Very easily.

Quotes in framesThere are times in our lives when we need a kind word or a word that will help us get through difficult moments when our self confidence is at the lowest and we are struggling to find confidence .

I have always framed words and saying that I have found to lift up my spirits and give me a boost of courage.

Many of these saying are from famous, successful people that wanted the world to know that at times they too had struggled.

Put in beautiful frames they can be placed on desks or book shelves and inspire you when ever your eye lands on them. I often give these out as small gifts.

Here are 6 of my recent favorites that you can easily print off as pdfs.

Making cards from old National GeographicNational Geographic was a staple in homes for almost a century. The high quality magazine printed extraordinary photos on thick rich paper and many people held onto them for decades.

These old magazines are easy to find at thrift stores and the paper is great for using in crafts.

I like to pop in a little gift card with anything I give.
While my tastes tends to run to pretty and elegant many of my friends have more avant garde taste and I make up these little note cards when I give items to them.

Easy to make, just take some interesting pages from National Geography and glue to card stock. I do use a paper cutter which makes the edges nice and square.

How to Make a Terrarium and Witch's Ball

Terrariums, Witch's BallEver wondered how to make a terrarium?

Terrariums have gone in and out of fashion over the last 150 years since Dr. Nathaniel Ward discovered that you could grow plants in glass enclosures.

Terrariums are ideal for people who want some greenery around them but also want it to be as low maintenance as possible.

Back in style again they are being made in everything from retro 70's glass bottles, traditional style Victorian cases, to very modern blown glass containers.

While terrariums are simple to make a Witch's Ball (called because they resemble a crystal ball) has a little secret in how they are made which I will be happy to share with you.

Surprise Bag Mystery Bag Printables

Surprise bagI make these little mystery or surprise bags for raffle prizes.

I have also used them as little favors bag and I know that they would go great in loot bags or prize packets.

Kids aside these would be great to hold a small gift for your sweetie  (that you can leave on a pillow or bedside table).

These small bags are made from a single sheet of paper that has the question mark printed on it.

The bags themselves are easy to form on either a small sturdy box or a piece of lumber.  I have a PDF and tutorial to show how easy it is.
Making matting for art and photographyGood matting sets off your artwork and photography so it moves from looking good to looking fabulous, but anyone who has ever started shopping around for matting quickly finds out how expensive it is.

If you are matting a fine piece of quality and expensive art then you should take the time and effort to do it properly with museum quality matting, but if you just want to slap something on the wall or display it for a short period of time then this is ideal.

Cheap, fast and easy you can make your home made art and photos look professional with this matting method.

Glossy Wrapping for Candy Boxes

| 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks
Candy boxCandy boxes tend to have a shiny glossy paper wrapping that is hard to emulate.

Regular paper will look nice but it doesn't have that sheen to it. Wrapping paper that is glossy rarely comes in white.

You could hunt down the type of paper you are looking for at specialty paper supply stores but there is a very inexpensive option that will give you the candy box look that you are looking for.

Sending Your Guests Off With Treats

Re-using Plastic box for treats
I always make way too much food when I have the family over (especially the sweets) and they are always delighted to take some home with them.

Though I try not to buy any food in excess packaging some times it can't be avoided and through out the year I keep the light plastic containers that many bakery, fruit and vegetable come in.

I clean them out and use them for take out containers for my guest. But I also have my little trick of making them look fancy-shmancy.

Make Storage Boxes from Tissue Boxes

Storage box
We seem always to be on the look out for stylish little storage boxes that will help us organize our lives.

This happy little container is made from a tissue box that had a modern bright pattern on it.

Many tissue boxes are made with a high grade board that is slightly waxed to resist soiling which makes it ideal for storage.

With a lid made from card stock no one would guess how it started it's life.

Easy to make and useful you will find that you are eying how much tissue is left in the boxes in your home so you can make another one.

I am happy to be linked to Sew Much Ado - We Did It Wednesday

Bristol board sock organizerI have to admit that I love scenes in movie where they show the closets of fabulously wealthy people.

It's not the amount of clothes that I covet, it's how everything is so amazingly organized!

Organizers can be extraordinarily expensive especially if you have them custom made and while I love the idea of being uber organized I am not willing to pay oodles of money for it.

I designed this organized to be made out of 4 sheets of Bristol board costing $2 plus tax. It does take a little bit of time to make but I think the effort is worth it. With the basics of how it's made you can customize one to fit your own space.

Hot Dog Hand Warmers
So I have a silly sense of humor... these little hand warmers are perfect if you have to be waiting outside or walking outside on a chilly winter's day. Slip one in each pocket to keep you hands toasty warm.

They are very simple to make using an easy pattern and sewing technique. I fill mine with rice as it is cheap and easy for me to get but I have heard of other options that you can check on the web.

Make a basket full to have handy by the front door for the whole family or make a bunch (litter?) to use as stocking stuffers for Christmas or as easy inexpensive gifts.

Make an Amazing (and Easy) Cardboard Playhouse

Making cardboard playhouse
Playhouses have to be one of the best toys for children. It makes their imaginations come alive as they deal with their own little homes.

This cardboard playhouse is extra easy to make but looks great.  You start with one large box and with some quick cuts and a bit of extra cardboard you have the house assembled and ready to decorate.

Maybe one of the best things about this playhouse is the cost. If you can get the cardboard box for free and use supplies that you already have around the house then cost is pretty close to nothing.

I decorated this in a Tudor Style but you can chose what ever design you like.

This would be a fabulous gift for a Birthday or Christmas or they can "help" you make it as a craft project.

Craft a Fall Twig Basket for Display

Crafting a Fall Twig Basket
This is a very easy and decorative basket to pull together and would look great on the table during Thanksgiving. The method of putting it together is relatively quick and simple and you can make it with branches from your own garden.

I filled it with apples from the farmers market but latter I think I will fill it with dried flowers and leave it on the front hallway table to great visitors into the house.

You can make these any size that you want just by changing the length of the branches but smaller would be better.

Remember that this is only a decorative basket and will not withstand being lifted when it is full. It is best to carefully carry it from the bottom.
