Frog Pickle - Fun Food Garnish

Frog pickle
So why the frog pickle?

I tend to do pool parties in the summer with outdoor buffets and I was just thinking on how I would like to decorate the platters while I was eating a pickle.

As it is I have been craving pickles lately, no reason for it, just am.

Calorie wise pickles are a great snack food since a large pickle only has about 10 calories.

I have used edible flowers and carved fruit in the past but I wanted to try something a bit different and whimsical. I think this fits the bill.

And how did I make this little guy?

I have always found that it is the smallest things that can make a party special, that your guest appreciate the details. Cost wise to make a few of these will be almost nothing but the effect (I think) will be great. I love finding things and ideas that are almost free but make life just a little more special.

Making a frog pickle 1Take one large pickle and cut a thin wedge in the end to form a mouth, cut two slices from a small pickle and put cloves in the center to make eyes.

Making a frog pickle 2
Cut a thin wedge on the top of the large pickle and place the eyes in it.

Making a frog pickle 3
Cut a large pickle in half lengthwise and cut notches out of the ends to look like feet. If the pickle is very wide you can trim the edges and you might have to cut the ends off if it is too long.  Place these under the frog.

Frog pickle
I cut another small piece of pickle so this frog could look up at the world but depending on how it would be set on the buffet plate you might not need to do this.

And there you have it, your very own frog pickle. This silly little thing can liven up any dull plate!
