Fast, Easy, Cheap Snack On the Go- The Secret of Slicing an Apple So It Doesn't' Brown

Sliced appleHealthy eating is probably at the top of your list for your New Year's resolutions.

Of course you are not going to deprive your self of snacks but ideally that snack should be fast to grab, cheap, healthy and super easy to eat.

Even more you want to be able to take your snacks with you.

An apple fits all of these requirements but the trick of making it easy to eat is how you slice it up.

Apples are notorious for turning brown as soon as their flesh is exposed but there is a way of doing it that will keep them fresh for the day until you are ready to eat them.

Sliced up appleAny apple that is sliced up and then placed back together will have the cut flesh sealed by the piece beside it.

I  find a sliced apple more elegant to nibble on
but you can cut your apple up in large sections as long as you can fit them back together again.

After cutting up your apple and re-assembling it wrap it tightly in cling wrap to make sure that it stays together.

If you have cut it in large pieces you could forgo the cling wrap and just skewer it with tooth picks.

Make sure that all the tooth picks are removed before you start eating it. (The apple fits together better than shown in the photo, I just wanted you to see were the cuts were.)

While there are many suggestions that you can keep an apple from browning by dipping it into a a mixture of lemon juice and water I personally don't like the taste of lemon on my apple.

With so many different varieties of apples you won't get bored of this if you keep choosing different types to eat. My personal favorite at this time is the Honey Crisp Apple.

Very neat idea and perfect for the kids!

No way! I had no idea! This is such a great tip. Thanks!

To keep the apple from going brown, I have also heard you can dip it in Sprite or lemon-lime soda. It will still leave some of the taste behind, but it won't be as strong, or as sour, as lemon juice.

Great idea for a lunch snack

they eat more of the apple when it is sliced up already for some reason.

A rubber band can hold the apple together, too.

What a GREAT idea! Thanks Elspeth!
