While many people feel that they have to have one during the Christmas season (I don't disagree) I do disagree with going out to the department store and just buying one nilly willy. (If you absolutely need one right now see if you can borrow one from an older friend or relative, they are more likely to have one).
These were the one item that I could pick up for a song when I was an antique dealers at any garage sale, thrift store, antique store and auction. As a matter of fact I have 6 punch bowls.
Why so many? I have never just used my punch bowls as punch bowls.
When we entertain with large buffets, no matter what the season, I use the punch bowls for the salads, I have used them to make huge trifles and they look amazing filled with flowers or potpourri. They are also pretty handy for punch.
While you might have problems finding them cheaply now, as soon as the season is past they will be on the shelves of the thrift stores and other places I mentioned going for a song. I have also noticed that new punch bowls don't seem to be made with as thick glass as the old ones.
There are hundreds of different styles of vintage punch bowls so look for one that you really love. I would never pay more than $7 for a punch bowl at a thrift store and usually bought them for a lot less. My one real splurge was a huge cut glass punch bowl with matching glass tray that I bought for $40 at an antique show. I fill it with flowers from my garden spring, summer and fall and pine cones and potpourri during Christmas.
