Breakfast, Is It Killing You?

| 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks
BreakfastThere are some facts that are indisputable, the earth travels around the sun, gravity pulls things down and like it or not, breakfast is still the most important meal of the day.

People who eat breakfast regularly tend to have less weight problems, more energy through out the day and better concentration.

Skipping breakfast is hard on the body and can lead to some expensive health problems down the road (your body was never meant to go for 18 hours between meals). But what to eat for breakfast?

Food in the last few years seems to become the enemy. Is the food we are eating for breakfast killing us? With hidden salts, hidden fats, and cholesterol,  it seems that everything that we reach for has had a study done to show how bad it is for us. Most people get their health information (and misinformation)from television commercials but how accurate are they?

What's the truth and how do we eat a healthy breakfast?

Origami

Origami Crane
Years ago I taught myself how to do some very simple origami.

Origami suited me at the time when I was a poor student since it took no special tools and paper was cheap and easily available to me.

I became quite proficient at making the traditional crane.

The origami crane is recognized as the international symbol of peace and for a while it even became my trademark as I would make them from what ever little scraps of paper I could find and leave them in odd little nooks and crannies of the places that I would work, or visit or study at.

Make Spirograph Gift Cards

Making Spirograph Gift CardsWho doesn't remember being a  kid and  playing with Spirograph sets to make really neat drawings. With a little bit of patience and a good pen you could make incredible designs.

The mathematical terms for these geometrical figures are hypotrochoids and epitrochoids.

Invented by British engineer Denys Fisher, Spirograph was introduced to North America in 1966 and its been a hit with kids and adults ever since. Black ink on white paper gives this easy craft a surprisingly sophisticated look. I include instructions on how to make the card boxes that they are displayed in so you could also make these as gifts.

Trash the Dress

Wedding dressI have had heard of a movement amongst young brides called "Trash the Dress".

The idea behind it is that you are only ever going to wear your wedding dress once so get some fabulous photos in it even if the dress gets destroyed in the process.

After the happy couple get their standard wedding photos they get photos of themselves jumping into water or riding a roller coaster or crawling over rocks.

The thought is why keep this dress pristine because you will never wear it again and chances are in 20 or 30 years your daughter will have no interest in wearing it either.

Stop Buying Stuff You Don't Need

Sale signThere was an older couple at a stationery supply store where the woman walked over to a display and saw lined paper, 250 sheets for 26 cents. "We should definitely buy some of this" she told her husband.

"But don't we have a whole pile of it at home?" he asked her.

"Yes," she answered as she was loading up her cart, "But you can never have too much paper".

Well, actually, yes you can. Even those who feel that they are smart consumers with their spending in control find that once in a while they are bringing shopping bags home with the oddest things.

Why do people buy stuff they don't need? Why do you but stuff you don't need? Here are 7 answers and some of them just might surprise you.

Packing up a Picnic - Tips & Hints

Packing up a picnicMy daughter and I seemed to be rushing in different directions the last few weeks and she suggested to me that we could sneak off and have a picnic together.

Now usually when I'm planning a picnic it is a military operation of packing everything imaginable, way too much food, and way to much stuff.

When did she want to take the picnic?

"Well now", she answered, "Now, we can go for lunch".

Now, as in right now, as in grab the moment and don't over plan it, just do it.
IMG_7144.JPGWhile the large craft stores might be a fun place to go browsing for pretty packaged craft kits if your children really enjoy doing a lot of crafts it is much too expensive of a place to buy from.

Packaged craft kits for children are terribly over prices and often terribly over packaged. A large box often only contains a small bag of materials and a few sheets of instructions.

You can gather your own craft supplies at home for a fraction of the price that you would spend in a craft store using materials from a variety of sources including free recycled materials.

Summertime and Board Games

Board gamesI had a kitchen full of teenagers on the weekend, they had come for a swim but the weather turned wicked and they decided to play a board game instead.

There are some things that never change and teenagers and board games are one of those things.

How easily they slip back into the liveliness of childhood, the playful bickering over rules, the teasing, the exaggerated dismay over unfortunate plays.

Board games are a favorite way to spend time with friends and family but they can cost a lot of money if you have to buy them new.

Here are some ideas to help you build up your board game collection.
