Are you completely broke? Are a dozen roses at $60 so out of the questions and besides he wouldn't like them anyway?
It always gets back to the "thought that counts" so here are a few thoughts of what you can do for your sweetie this Valentine's that won't break the budget.
Fun, frugal and thoughtful they are a collections of Valentine's gifts they won't soon forget. And while I mostly write for she(s) to give to he(s), some of these things would be wonderful for he(s) to give to she(s).
It is actually quite easy to do and does not take any special molds and equipment.
Buy a good quality chocolate and follow the directions in Making Chocolate Hearts Without Molds
2. This could be tricky but try to find out the songs that they thought
were romantic when they were in their early teens and make a CD for
them. This is really great for anyone who is 30 or older. They might be
horrified at what they use to enjoy but they will appreciate the
thought.
3. Autographed photograph of yourself. Supposedly the first gift that Princess Diana gave her tragic lover
Dodi Fayed was an autographed photo of her self.
In the 1999 movie, The
Thomas Crown Affair, there is a scene where the autographed photos of
the hero's many girlfriends are examined by his soon-to-be love.
Now in the age of digital photography it is easy to get a photo of yourself and have it made into a 5 x 7 size for about 99 cents.
You could dress yourself up in 30's glam with deep dark lipstick and make the photo in black and white. The lighting is very important with portrait photography. Make sure that you are not in full sun but a more flattering light. Practice your inscription before you sign the photo.
4. While dinner is the standard fare for Valentine's have a romantic brunch instead. Make sure that the kitchen is clean the night before and that you have everything you need for brunch so there won't be any last minute ingredients you need to run out for.
4. While dinner is the standard fare for Valentine's have a romantic brunch instead. Make sure that the kitchen is clean the night before and that you have everything you need for brunch so there won't be any last minute ingredients you need to run out for.
The menu can be as complicated or as simple as you would like but don't get so wrapped up in the food that you forget that the whole point of the brunch is to spend some time with each other.

With a little bit of thought, you could make it one of your sweetie's happiest Valentine's Days ever.
5. Cupids arrow is just as important as the heart at Valentine's day. Let them
know that your heart has been pierced by love by giving your honey a
Candy Arrow.
Make an arrow from a bamboo skewer by adding a black paper
arrow head and black paper vanes (feathers at the end) and skewer soft
candies inbetween.(Gummy hearts would be very appropriate).
When adding the gummy hearts wipe the skewer with a damp paper towel before adding each candy so they slide on easily.
Wrap it in
cellophane with bows on the end for a great presentation.
6. Red Silicon Oven Mitts. This is were practical meets frugal.
He's not
that into fluffy gifts but he's really into cooking. Silicon oven mitts
are the best of the bunch and usually sold individually.
It would be
something that he would appreciate and not think silly or wasteful.
The
card? "To my Valentine, so he can handle Hot Stuff."
7.Gummy lips and gummy teeth. Some times love is not all sweetness and
light. This mix of lips and teeth might give your Valentine
something to think about. Or if you are a huge fan of Vampire books
then there will be no explanation needed.
You can buy these gummy candies from bulk food stores. You could place them in a clear cellophane bag or even a small gift bag.
The card attached might
read,"Happy Valentine's Day, get ready for me to take a BITE out of
you."
8.Cyclamen and Candy. If you are determined to get some type of flower then consider a flowering plant like a cyclamen.
The delicate flowers are somewhat heart shaped and you can buy cyclamen in red, pink or white.
Add some gummy hearts that have been placed on bamboo skewers and place in the soil of the plant.
You could dress it up further by adding decorative heart paper and a red bow.
9. A small bottle of bubbly (sparkling wine) is inexpensive but can really put you in the mood for Valentine's Day.
Champagne isn't the only game in town. Sparkling wines often will give you the same delightful bubbles for a fraction of the cost.(read Champange Alternatives).
See what your local wine merchant or liquor store has to offer.
10. A great big fat chocolate bar. Simple, classic and appreciated.
You could take the wrapping off of it and make a personalized wrap as they do for wedding favors.
With a little bit of thought, you could make it one of your sweetie's happiest Valentine's Days ever.
